On January 20, 2016, PL’s Gail Gatchalian facilitated the Human Resources Association of Nova Scotia’s half-day Workplace Investigations Seminar. The objectives of the seminar were to learn how to:
- conduct competent workplace investigations into allegations such as discrimination, harassment, bullying and occupational health and safety complaints;
- gather relevant information;
- comply with legal responsibilities and adhere to best practices; and
- how to identify opportunities at each step of the investigation process to protect, restore and even enhance workplace relationships.
The seminar covered the following topics:
- Pre-investigation planning and communications
- Investigator competence and impartiality
- Questioning techniques
- Assessment of credibility
- Report-writing
- Post-investigation restorative measures.
